A 31-year-old Hilo man was killed Tuesday morning in a two-vehicle wreck that closed Saddle Road for three hours.

According to police, a Nissan sedan driven by Calsey B. Santos crossed the center line at mile marker 19 and sideswiped a tow truck heading the other direction.

The wreck was reported at 5:23 a.m.

Santos, who suffered head injuries, was pronounced dead at 8:07 a.m. at Hilo Medical Center.

The tow truck driver, a 48-year-old man from Kailua-Kona, and his passenger, a 58-year-old man from Hilo, were not injured.

The road was closed from 5:43 a.m. to 8:42 a.m. while police investigated the wreck.

Sgt. Christopher Gali said the cause remains under investigation.

Gali said the tow truck driver tried to avoid the collision after seeing Santos’ car cross the center line.
